| Shelby's portal -> Bagheera |
A black shadow dropped down into the circle. It was Bagheera the Black Panther, inky black all over, but with the panther markings showing up in certain lights like the pattern of watered silk. Everybody knew Bagheera, and nobody cared to cross his path; for he was as cunning as Tabaqui, as bold as the wild buffalo, and as reckless as the wounded elephant. But he had a voice as soft as wild honey dripping from a tree, and a skin softer than down.
The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling
In 1999 I started my training as a cub scout leader at the First Canberra Cub Pack. For me, it was the start of a new phase of the scouting journey - an adult teaching the youth the way I had been taught when I was a youth. The cub program is based around the stories of the Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. On my first pack night the cubs and Akela sat in a circle and gave me a scout name, taken from the Jungle Book as is the tradition. The name they gave me was Bagheera.
I have left the pack for a variety of reasons, mostly because I don't have time to work full time, study part time and run a pack. However I am still involved in scouting as a water activites leader, and I still like to be called Bagheera.
